New Years Resolutions

I'm either ahead of the game for 2017 or severely behind on my 2016 resolutions.  Either way I feel pretty good.

My Dad asked if I was going to face life with a new air of calm and ...Well I can't remember the other word but in essence he wants to know if I'm going to be unflappable.  After I laughed heartily at the thought of a calm cool and collected CAB, I mentioned that compared to years past I am much calmer.

Last year I tried to do a 365 photo challenge but it quickly became too overwhelming and felt like work. This year I found a 52 week challenge which feels much more manageable.

I also got back in the saddle today.  The bicycle saddle.  It's been 8 months since I've been on a bike of any sort and I figured I'd do an easy hour ride.  It's amazing what you can forget.  Last year I started riding and forgot how difficult starting up could be.  15 minutes in I decided I was going to caught up a lung so now I have a base line.  Tomorrow's goal, 20 mins.

October 10, 2016 - Listening to Romance

So this weekend L and I drove to Virginia and we listed to V.K. Powell's "About Face" on Audible. Oddly enough, I enjoyed this as an audible a bit more than I did when I read it.  Ok, fine when I read it with my eyes, I didn't post a review and I said "it was fine."  As an audible I liked it but also came to the following conclusion:

"CAB, you're banned from reading or listening to romance novels for the foreseeable future... maybe forever."

Why you may ask? I'm jaded, I'm jaded and cynical and I liked the plot but got all hung up on the language.   Lately, I always get hung up in the language.  Who talks to the woman they love like characters do in a romance novel?  "My Love, I need you right now, shove your hands down my pants."  Fine I made that last bit up, but all the "My Love" this and "My Love" that is just too much for me.

I did discover that I can read a sex scene and not be embarrassed or horrified.  LISTENING to someone else NARRATE a sex scene.  Um, no.  I was blushing while driving and finally just started hitting the 30 second forward button. L actually asked what I was doing.  I think I said "I can't drive and listen to this."  So add prude to my list.  I really had no idea how awkward that could be but it took on an entirely different  dimension and I felt like I was listening to a bad porno.  BTW this is all me, the narrator did a fine job, but if I ever meet the narrator I want to ask how on earth she manages not to giggle with the dialogue and/or the descriptions of what is going on.  That or maybe the publisher should put together a blooper reel.  I'd listen to that.

June 8, 2016 - Renovation Projects 2016: Day 1 Demolition Day

Well it seems we continue on our annual major renovations roll.  This year we had a small incident with water leaking in our downstairs bathroom.  Which made me call L in a panic saying we needed to pull up some time to make sure that we didn't have any water damage.  L never stressing about things I stress about (thank God) said: "I'm looking at this as an opportunity to update that bathroom." Which or course led to me saying "Well if we're going to do that can we look into fixing the upstairs guest bathroom as well?"

Today, the demolition began:

Downstairs Bathroom Before Demo:

Ok the dog is just nosy and not actually part of the bathroom

Downstairs after Day 1:

March 8, 2016 - Weird Encounters

Sometimes I think I am carrying a sign that says "Tell Me Everything About Yourself that I Never Wanted To Know."  Take today for instance, I'm at the gym, grabbing my stuff from the locker room when some woman, who I know works out with the same trainer I do, but other than a casual greeting of "Hi" have never spoken with, asks me if my workout was horrendous.  At first, I didn't realize she was speaking with me.  "Hello, changing into my street clothes here... only my sister and L are allowed to talk to me while I'm putting my pants on."  So I say, no I had a good workout.  Which was apparently her cue to launch into a description of her recent "tummy tuck" and "lift" she had done 6 weeks ago.  Why? Why are you telling me this?  For that matter, why are you telling me and the 5 other women who are also in the locker room this?  OMG No I do NOT want to see the scar on your abdomen!   People, I can NEVER unsee that.   I now, know that a tummy tuck is "worse than her two c-sections" which she is telling me as I walk away from her.  Seriously, I am walking away, back turned and she is still talking to me about this.  I'd be willing to bet that after I escaped she was telling the other unsuspecting women about her "Lift".  What she had lifted I don't know, I ran away before she could launch into that or god forbid show me that incision.  The last thing I heard drifting out the doorway was that working out before surgery really helps with the recovery.  Now I can attest to that, because I have personal experience with that... want to see the scar?

Book Review: Widow: A Bertha Brannon Mystery by Martha Miller

I enjoyed this book and the mystery behind who was responsible for Toni's murder and why. Throughout the story you have an idea of who is involved but there are a couple of twists that I didn't anticipate until near the very end of the story.  I really liked Bertha and her grandma, and I hope there are additional stories with them in it.  I seriously wanted to slap Toni's police partner from the moment we are introduced to him.

Overall the story was entertaining, although there were a couple of typos that threw me off because initially I couldn't tell if they were typos or dialect.  Typos.  Fortunately, not enough to get really annoying.

January 30, 2016 - Book Review: Fated (Servants of Fate #3)

This is the third in the series and based on the flow I imagine there will not be any additional ones.  That being said, as with the others I thoroughly enjoyed this story.  I started out listening to this one as an audible while doing chores and because it would sync with my e-reader I finished it on my kindle and I enjoyed both formats.

The narrator of the audible did a credible job switching between characters (she was also the narrator of the prior 2 in the series) and in some ways made them come to life in a manner that I am not sure I would have captured had I just been reading the story.  Along those lines I was so captivated by the story that when I finished my chores for the day, I had to pick up my e-reader to finish the book because I just could not put it down.

January 8,2016 - Underneath

This is kind of cheating because its an old pic.  I took this in Barcelona in November 2011.  I thought the underside of the Octopus was pretty cool

January 8, 2016 - Family

I'm a day behind, life got crazy and I didn't post yesterday so here it is.

The Girlie on the left, the Beastly Boy on the right.  If you don't think they count as family then you probably grew up with goldfish for pets. ;-)

January 6, 2015 - Sunrise

The sunrise this morning was too nice to not try and get a decent picture.  I especially liked that I could still see the moon.

January 2, 2016 - Bokeh

I'm not sure this counts as truly being as being "bokeh" style, I had to google it, but this is as good as I could get it.

January 1, 2016 - Celebrate

I'm going to make a concerted effort to take and post a photo every day during 2016.  Now I'm not claiming they will be good, but hopefully they will get better.
