February 26, 2013 – Tidbits

Well I meant to give you an update yesterday but once again time gets away from me.

  • I dropped the girlie off at the Vet this morning so she could get “fixed”.  I was sure to take the time to explain to her that she was just going overnight and that I would pick her up again tomorrow.  I didn’t want her to think we were abandoning her.  She seemed to handle the news of a sleepover remarkably well.  However, I think she must have had a conversation with the beastly boy because she kept asking me what was broken and why did it need to be “fixed.”

  • Today is my father’s b-day.  Yeah Dad.  I went to lunch with my Mom and Dad to celebrate.  Somehow I got the best end of the deal since they wouldn’t let me contribute.

  • I’m also taking full advantage of the girlie being out of the house.  I gave the beastly boy a haircut, trimmed his nails, he’s getting a bath next.  The final thing is I’m going to clean the kitchen floor.  Do you have any idea how tough it is to clean a floor when a dog is chasing the mop?  Well considering she chases the broom, leaf rakes, the vacuum – I figured today was a good day to clean.

February 20, 2013 - Gym Etiquette Item #2

Please for the love of all that is good in this world don’t clip your toenails while in the locker room.  Hell don’t clip them ANYWHERE in the gym.  That’s something that should be done in the privacy of your own home, preferably the bathroom, where you can catch and dispose of the clippings properly.   Not the locker room, on a bench that other people sit on to put their shoes and socks on.  Yeah, no!

Speaking of the gym, I obviously went to the gym today and worked out for 50 minutes.  Tomorrow I’ll shoot for an hour.

February 19, 2013 One order of Motivation Please

I need to lose weight, I say I want to lose weight, I want to be fit and feel strong again. Yet I’m not doing the things I need to do to achieve these things.  Sure I am doing some of them but I need to be good.  I need to be diligent, dedicated.  Hell I need a kick in the pants.  Unfortunately I need a kick in the pants… every day.  Maybe I could get a recording of Jillian Micheals yelling “Get your ass to the gym!!!” which wouldn’t stop until I actually showed up at the gym.  Never mind that would be a bad idea. It would just make me smash my phone.  It would be so much easier to just go next door and borrow a cup of motivation.  Well that would be easier if I still lived next door to my 1st neighbors.  Rosie she’d have a cup of motivation to spare.  I’ve even considered a mantra….

Exactly that is as far as the mantra got.  Maybe self-hypnosis of course that results in the same problem as the mantra.

February 18, 2013 - Mammograms and Ultrasounds

*sigh*

Saturday I had my annual boob crushing a.k.a Mammogram.  I think my sister has the better idea she and her friends try to schedule their mammograms for the same day.  Then they have Mammograms and Margarita’s.  Not that mammograms are that unpleasant but a follow-up margarita would certainly make the experience much more enjoyable.

So today I got a phone call saying that my GYN had ordered a follow up ultrasound because I have “dense” breast tissue.  My response to that was “what does that mean?”  The poor person on the phone didn’t understand that I didn’t mean “what does I need an ultrasound mean?” but rather “Why do I need an ultrasound, dense tissue aside… was there a problem that would warrant the need?”  It seems the only problem is that my tissue is dense and the law requires that they offer me the opportunity for a “medically necessary” ultrasound.  Who could possibly turn down an offer like that, especially when you figure out that the meaning is, they didn’t get a good enough picture with the regular mammogram so we’re moving to the deluxe option.  It’s like winning the lottery, but not.  Someone tell me that at the very least I don’t have to have mt breasts smooshed between two plates for the ultrasound.

February 17, 2013 – Book Review – The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer

The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer

Publisher: Self Published
Genre: Fantasy/Romance

Description from Amazon

“Three thousand years ago, a god told a lie. Now, only a goddess can tell the truth.

Persephone has everything a daughter of Zeus could want--except for freedom. She lives on the green earth with her mother, Demeter, growing up beneath the ever-watchful eyes of the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. But when Persephone meets the enigmatic Hades, she experiences something new: choice.

Zeus calls Hades "lord" of the dead as a joke. In truth, Hades is the goddess of the underworld, and no friend of Zeus. She offers Persephone sanctuary in her land of the dead, so the young goddess may escape her Olympian destiny.

But Persephone finds more than freedom in the underworld. She finds love, and herself.”

Book Review
5 out of 5 stars

I have always been a sucker for fairytales and myths I consider myself doubly lucky that “The Dark Wife” is a retelling of the mythical story of Persephone and Hades with a romantic twist.  Certainly I could say that it was a lesbian twist but I think qualifying this story as a lesbian retelling would not do the story justice especially because I think anyone who enjoys myths and fairytales would also enjoy this story.

The story is told from Persephone’s perspective.  Her life has been idyllic, until Zeus rapes and kills her lover.  As if that is not horrific enough she quickly finds out that Zeus has set his sights on her.  As Persephone contemplates all of this she says: “In a life of no choices, this one brash act could set me on a path toward the freedom I longed for more than anything else on – or above – the earth.”  For me, this line summarizes the Persephone’s story.  Can she “Rebel” and set her own course in life.

This was a well written, engaging story.

February 15, 2013 - Gym Adventures

Alright, yes, sometimes just managing to get my butt in gear and going to the gym is and adventure.  I'll also admit that throughout my life and the many gyms I have attended I have seen enough that very little "shocks" me.  That being said there are still some things that I find odd or at a minimum something that I would be uncomfortable doing.

For example, the elderly woman standing in the locker room stark naked having a lengthy conversation with two other individuals who are not naked.  It didn't make me uncomfortable but it did highlight for me that I personally would be uncomfortable standing around in a gym locker room conversing while naked.  At a minimum I would be getting dressed while conversing.  It's called multi-tasking.  I can do it.  It raises the question, how do you get so comfortable with your own body that you can just stand there having a conversation while strangers walk in and out of the locker room?  Hell how do you get so comfortable that you can stand around naked with people you know but are not your significant other and have a conversation?  To think I'm proud of the fact that I can simply change in and out of a bathing suit in the locker room.

February 12, 2013 – Book Review – Ever After by Kim Harrison

Book Review – Ever After by Kim Harrison

Publisher: Harper Voyager
Genre: SciFi/Fantasy/Paranormal

Book Description from Amazon

“New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison returns to the sexy, supernatural adventures of Rachel Morgan with the eleventh book in the Hollows series Ever After

The ever-after, the demonic realm that parallels our own, is shrinking, and if it disappears, so does all magic. It's up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to fix the ever-after before the fragile balance between magic users and humans falls apart.

Of course, there's also the small fact that Rachel is the one who caused the ley line to rip in the first place, and her life is forfeit unless she can fix it. Not to mention the most powerful demon in the ever-after—the soul-eater Ku'Sox Sha-Ku'ru—has vowed to destroy her, and has kidnapped her friend and her goddaughter as leverage. If Rachel doesn't give herself up, they will die.

Forced by circumstance, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack—a partnership fraught with dangers of the heart as well as betrayal of the soul—to return to the ever-after and rescue those she loves. One world teeters on the brink of interspecies war, the other on the brink of its very demise—and it's up to Rachel to keep them both from being destroyed.”

Book Review
5 out 5 stars

Ever After is the 11th book in The Hallows/Rachel Morgan series.  Throughout the series the reader watches Rachel struggle and grow in both her powers and her maturity.  However, this feels like the first time that Rachel has really come into her own, and making decisions while considering the consequences and potential impact on the people she cares about.  Both Jenks and Ivy have limited roles in this novel, Ivy is very limited but it fits the plot and carries through from the last book “A Perfect Blood” in demonstrating how their relationship dynamic is changing. In some ways the change in the dynamic makes me a little sad but at the same time the continued maturity of Rachel and her changing relationship with Trent, Al, and Newt make up for the feeling of loss.

I don’t want to leave any spoilers in this review but I will say there is plenty of unexpected turmoil and betrayal.  It’s rare that I ever go back and read a book but I am seriously considering re-reading the prior 2 books, Pale Demon and A Perfect Blood just to see if I missed anything.

February 7, 2013 – Snow and Waiting Rooms

I should know not to go to the grocery store before a “major” storm.  I did consider buying up all the milk and bread and then attempting to sell it on the black market tomorrow and Saturday when the storm really hits.   Of course, I realized that putting that cash into the stock market might be smarter since there is no guarantee that the storm will actually be as predicted.  We all need jobs where we can be wrong most of the time and still get paid.  My personal weather prediction for the weekend:  There will be weather.

Oh on another note, I went to the GYN yesterday and no I will not share any graphic details.  I will say that it was the most amusing waiting room experience I have had in awhile.  I’m sitting in the waiting room and there is this couple next to me.  I’m assuming husband and obviously pregnant wife, the wife gets called into the back.  She asks her husband to come and he says “What the heck for?” Then he turns to me and says “This is number 3 I already know the deal.”  Fortunately I managed to use my inside voice which responded:  “yeah but do you know the deal that just got struck when you responded that way to your pregnant aka “hormonal” wife?”

A few minutes later a female sales rep walks out of the office and she’s wearing tights that have a fishnet pattern.  Seriously fishnet patterned tights.  I guess that is better than actual fishnet stockings.  Oye

February 6, 2013 – A Revolting Discovery, and other things

I went to the gym this morning and got a decent workout in.  Initially, I did a short warm-up on one of the elliptical trainers.  Generally I try to keep some space between me and the next person and this morning that was pretty easy as there was only one other guy on the ellipticals and he was 3 over.  Why is that important?  Well he was wearing headphones and apparently one of his favorite songs came on because he started singing along… loudly.  Picture some of the worst American Idol tryouts.  That was this guy.  I started giggling so much I finally gave up on my warm up and moved.

After I got back home the beastly boy and I were getting ready to go outside and of course we want the girlie to come with us, but I couldn’t find her.  Then I heard her drinking water so I assumed she was in the kitchen.  Yeah, well we know what happens when we assume right.  Well sure enough the girlie made an ass out of me.  Ther she was going to town drinking out of the toilet.  That’s the revolting thing.  Come on, she has a nice big bowl of fresh water that I just put in her bowl, is she drinking that?  No she’s totally ignoring it for the toilet.  Disgusting although I guess it’s good to know that if we ever accidently let her alone for several days she’d be resourceful enough to not die of thirst, but still it’s revolting.

February 4, 2013 – Cravings

I got up this morning and I’m feeling about 95% better so I headed to the gym and got a work out in.  I’m still feeling pretty good, but now for the strange part, I’m craving sauerkraut.  I know really of all the things I could possibly crave why on earth would it be that?  No I can assure you that I am not pregnant.  So breakfast after working out = sauerkraut.  Twisted I know but I couldn’t see a reason to not give in to the craving.  I can assure you however, if I start craving chocolate and sauerkraut I will most definitely skip that urge.

Today we’ve got a busy day.  The girlie has to go to the vet.  I’m taking bets that she’ll weigh in just over 50 pounds.  She also has obedience class tonight.  We’ve already been through puppy class but this should help us be more structured and continue to focus on getting her behavior controlled.  The only drawback is the dogs aren’t allowed to play with each other before or after class.  Now THAT would be awesome because it would exhaust the girlie.

February 3, 2013 - Random Thoughts

The Superbowl – I’m cheering for the Ravens because their helmets are better than the 49’rs.  Hey that’s as good a reason to pick a team as any other, especially considering I don’t follow football at all.  In fact I think to make this game more interesting they should soak the field and make them play in mud.

I finally feel like I am on the upswing as it relates to this head cold that’s been kicking my butt for the last week.  I even went running on Saturday.  Ok fine, it was jogging/walking but I made the effort and that counts for something.  Let’s hope that tomorrow I feel even better and can get back on track with working out.  Unfortunately, I think it may be a wee bit unrealistic of me to try and lose 10 pounds between today and Wednesday when I have to go to the doctor.  *sigh*  What are my chances of getting them to not weigh me?  Slim to none.

New and exciting, at least for me:  I’ve started reading the new Kim Harrison novel “Ever After”.

Would it be wrong to skip out of the superbowl and grab some ice cream?  Then I could have a super bowl of my own.
