June 27, 2011 - Weekend Update

Well we made it back to CT in one piece, technically two pieces (L and I).  The flight was good, but why is it that the last 3 hours of the flight take as long to go by as the the first 5 hours?

We met my mom and dad at Ruby Tuesday's Saturday evening for a little quality time catch up.  This is one of my favorite things that we do the night we come home for a visit.  Not the Ruby Tiesday's part - the meeting my parents for dinner part (although I do really enjoy Ruby Tuesday's).

Sunday morning I met my parents, Mr & Mrs. P, and Mrs. T for breakfast at the diner.  Switerzerland seriously needs to get a diner or two.

Sunday afternon we went to Mom & Dad's for Sunday dinner and played cards with the family.  That is probably one of the things I miss the most: playing 6 handed pinochle.

Oh, and my sister and I went running last night... a very slow pace but at least I can say I ran 2 miles and that is a good start/

June 24, 2011 - Travel Plans

Morning (or afternoon) People.   Today is Friday, and normally I'm thrilled with that but it is doubly nice because tomorrow morning we fly home (CT and MI) to spend some time with out families.  it's going to be a bit hectic because the 1st few days we're in CT then we head out to MI to visit with L's family (and celebrate her b-day) then its back to CT and then back to Switzerland.  Yes I know just thinking about all that flying in a 10 day period is exhausting.  I will be sure to download some books before hand.  Too many flights or not I'm looking forward to the trip.  It will be nice to be in CT and it will be very nice to see L's family.  We haven't been to MI I think since November so we have some catching up to do.

I've also prepped the beast for "camp" I think he's ready and hopefully they will pair him up again with a nice golden retriever like they did last time.

So anyway that's it, tomorrow we spend the day on a plane.   I'll try and keep you updated on any fun events next week.  There is a dessert 1st night ;)

June 23, 2011 – When Bad Things Happen To Good People

That was the title of a book I read in college.  I think it was for one of the many religion courses I took.  I have no idea what made me think of that just now, except I was thinking about the batch of brownies I made yesterday and how poorly they came out.  Lessoned learned: there is a significant difference between butter and margarine in the brownie making business despite the box saying in German that margarine is an acceptable substitute.  When bad things happen to good brownies?  Maybe that’s what made me think of the title.  Who knows.  I think the book was going on about free will and the gist was “stuff happens” we deal with it.  Then again I could be wrong it was at least 26 years ago, maybe 27.  Lord I’m getting old.

I actually have a bunch of things that followed this thought but it started to get all up in the church and my recent ire with Archbishop Dolan in NY so let’s just leave it at that.

June 22, 2011 – Exciting News and Care Packages

Personally I think care packages fall under the realm of exciting news but they are in fact two distinct things.

Yesterday the postman came by and rang our buzzer.  I tried to get to the buzzer in time, but it’s just as well I didn’t.  All things considered, on those few occasions I’ve managed to hit the speaker I end up speaking in English and the person downstairs is speaking in German and we have no idea what the other is saying.  We also have my last buzzer experience which resulted in me meeting the Swiss version of Jehovah’s Witnesses. That was fun.

Anyway, the postman gave up on me and left a slip that we had a package that I would need to get at the post office.  Now I had no idea who would be sending us a package, we hadn’t ordered anything and typically we only get bills here and those are in L’s name.  Needless to say I was very curious.  So this morning off I go to the post office.  Turns out we have a rather heavy box from our friends L&M.  They are the couple who came to visit us earlier in the month.  I called my “L” to see if she wanted me to wait to open the box.  Fortunately, she knows me well enough to know that my curiosity is killing me.  Thankfully I am not a cat.  What’s in the box?

I didn’t understand the Fruity Pebbles part of the care package until I read the card.  We’re supposed to make Fruity Pebbles Marshmallow Treats.  I think we can manage that.

Thanks L & M!!!!

**** random thought **** I am totally addicted to Adele’s CD 21

Ok back to our regularly scheduled program....

Other Exciting News:

L heard today that we got tickets to some of the events for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.  Yes I know it’s a year away, but it doesn’t make it any less exciting.  We entered the lottery a month or so ago.  We knew that there wasn’t a great chance that we would get tickets for any of the track or cycling events but we got tickets to see Hockey (Field Hockey) which I am over the moon about.

Have I ever mentioned I played Field Hockey in HS?  I did.  My friend CS got me to play our freshman year.  They were trying to get enough girls to play so they could put together a JV team.  I seriously considered NOT playing because you had to wear a “skirt”.  CS explained that it was not a “skirt” it was a “kilt”  (I’m not sure that it passed as either of those things the 1st two years we played).  However, running around with stick thwacking balls and knocking over opposing players (another story) seriously made up for the kilt thing.  I think out of all the sports that I played that is the one that I miss most often.

Anyway as it stands we have tickets to see a couple Field Hockey Matches, Basketball (womens), and Volleyball.  Yeah!

June 21, 2011 - Random Thoughts

  • I jinxed myself.  A few days ago I made the mistake of commenting that I hadn't had a nightmare/night terror in a week or so.  *Sigh* So now I'm making up for lost time, I think I'm on day 4 of "mild" screaming.  The bright side:
    •  most of them have just been nightmares and not night terrors,
    • I haven't actually woken up every time
    • the spider was small last night (versus the size of a ceiling fan)
    • my screams hav not been loud enough for the neighbors to hear... I hope.
  • When someone decides they want to be a grape farmer, do they also decide if they want to be a raisin farmer or are raisins just grapes gone bad..
  • Baby grapes or perhaps Baby Raisins

The steep hill

June 20, 2011 – Weekend Update

The weather was WILD this weekend; Rain, Wind, more Rain, more Wind broken occasionally by 15 minute intervals of sun.  Strange.

This weekend was Zurich Pride so Saturday L and I decided we would head into the city to watch the parade.  These are the pictures I took …..

…. What?  You don’t see any pictures?  Ah, well we didn’t see a parade.  I don’t think we had the wrong location, they published a map.  Regardless we saw nada, nothing.  Seriously, nothing.  We traipsed around a looking for evidence of a parade in progress, noise, drums, horns, people… trash.  Maybe rain melted everyone.  It was not a total bust because we did stop at the chocolate store before heading back home.  We also decided we would try hitting the festival on Sunday.  Well I’m sorry to report that we had no better luck with the festival, although we did see where it should have been, as the crew were bringing down the tent poles in the random torrential downpour.  So this weekend gets classified as a bit of a bust.

June 17, 2011 – Kung Fu Fighting

It’s Friday and I continue to avoid the brownie lady, which is in direct correlation to the fact that I can’t get myself to go running.  No running… no brownie.  However, that has very little to do with anything except that I also always go to the grocery store on Friday mornings.  This morning was no different, except that I was surprised to hear “Kung Fu Fighting” on the radio in the grocery store.  Sure I hear songs in English here but I was a little caught off guard by this one.  I don’t know what it is about this song that puts a little pep in my step, but it does.  The negative side effect is that now I have this song stuck in my head.  It’s even running over the tunes playing on my iPod.  So what the heck, I thought I would share and you could have this song stuck in your head to….

Happy Friday!

June 15, 2011 - Lost

Has someone seen my motivation?  I think it’s wandering around, lost.  It was last seen wearing tacky Bermuda shorts, a tank top, sunglasses and saying something about needing an umbrella drink.  If you should come across my motivation, please approach it with caution.  Better yet, please notify me immediately of its whereabouts and I will come fetch it.  Preferably after imbibing in an umbrella drink myself.

June 14, 2011 - The Beastly Boy

I gave the boy a small rawhide bone today.  A desperate attempt to keep his bad breath at bay.

What does the boy do with the bone? He looks for a place to hide it.

And is not very happy that I caught him in the act

Despite being caught, he wasn't ready to give up his quest to "bury" the bone.  I had to follow him around the apartment and each time he thought he'd found a good spot I'd say: "I can see you" forcing him to move on.  Eventually, he finally decided his only option was to eat the bone.

June 13, 2011 – Weekend Update

Saturday L and I were invited to spend the day in Winterthur with D.  D is L’s secretary and now having met D I know who is in charge.  She was absolutely wonderful and went to what I believe is a great deal of trouble to make sure that we had a wonderful time.  D met us at the train station and then we started out tour of Winterthur.  We went to three museums; the first was the Oskar Reinhart Collection at the R√∂merholz museum.  This was pretty cool because the collection was a private one and it was given to Switzerland along with the house that the collection is displayed in.  I am embarrassed to say that my knowledge of the artists and their works is lacking but we saw quite a few works from the 15th and 16th century as well as works by Renoir and Monet.

The second was also pretty impressive although I can’t remember the name of that museum.  The last and my favorite was the fotomuseum, specifically the display of Hans Steiner’s works.  They were really amazing black & whites.  I think the majority of the photos on display were from the 1930’s – 1950’s.  The ones that really pulled at me were of the Swiss Military during WWII and the refugee children from Belgium.  It just brings to mind how little I know or could even understand what it was like in Europe or anywhere for that matter during that war.

Then there were some really phenomenal pictures of various expeditions attempting to climb the north face of the Eiger.  I admit that I can’t separate the idea of people climbing the Eiger and Clint Eastwood.  Seriously, who would want to climb that mountain knowing that there is an assassin wandering around?

Anyway we had a great time and here is a picture of Me, D and L (from the bottom going clockwise) in Winterthur.

June 10, 2011 – Cowboy Junkies

I’m in a Cowboy Junkies state of mind.  The band… although I like the concept of cowboys I’ve never met one so my opinion on that topic is pretty basic.  I like the “idea” of cowboys.  Back to the Cowboy Junkies, I like their music, a lot.  I remember seeing them in concert in New Haven.  I was on a date with some guy.  I remember the concert, not the guy.  Which is not a huge revelation, my sister has pointed out that as a general rule of thumb I don’t remember any of the names of the guys I’ve dated.

My favorite Cowboy Junkies albums (yes albums… those flat plastic things with grooves… I’m old):

The Caution Horses
Pale Sun Crescent Moon
Black Eyed Man

Favorite Songs:
Speaking Confidentially
‘cause Cheap Is How I feel
Rock and Bird
A Horse in The Country
This Street, That Man, This Life
Cold Tea Blues
Sweet Jane (this is a fantastic cover)

Weekend Plans
Speaking of Sun, the song that just came on is speaking of it but I’m taking that as a cue; The sun has finally peeked out and it’s looking like the afternoon will be nice.  Which I hope means that tomorrow will also be nice.  L’s secretary invited us to Winterthur tomorrow.  She’s going to show us around, take us to a museum and then we’re going to lunch.  This is extremely kind/generous of her so I am hoping the weather is nice and that we all enjoy the day.

June 9, 2011 – Musical Shuffle a.k.a “Where did that come from?”

Ok 1st it seems that my iPod is in a weird time warp.  The last 3 songs that played were:

Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man” - I like this song but have no idea how it got onto my music collection

The Happenings “See You in September” – This is god awful and I can only assume that some gremlin snuck in during the night and downloaded this song

Then the real killer the song “Solitare”:  ok kill me please, this is AM radio from the 70’s awful.  At least I  know how it got on my iPod.  Apparently, Jann Arden felt the need to cover this song.  Why Jann?  Seriously, WHY?  I managed to suffer through a few lines before my ears started to bleed and I skipped forward.  What’s next up in the list:

Barry White singing “Baby, We Better Try to Get It Together.”  Well at least that’s a decent song, unfortunately it was immediately followed by

Nicole Atkins singing Blue Christmas.   Ok who the heck is Nicole Atkins and why is she singing a Christmas song in June?  SKIPPING

Beth Orton’s I wish I never Saw the Sunshine.  I like Beth, I really do, but is my iPod stays on this path I’m going to start wishing I never got out of bed.

Norah Jones – Until The End  Where have all the upbeat songs gone?

Ahhh… Annie Lennox – Legend in My Living Room

My OCD is kicking in and I feel compelled to make it through 10 songs before I can end my (and by default your) torture.

Matchbox Twenty – Crutch

Bonnie Raitt – Spit of Love.

What is my iPod trying to tell me?  My Musical horror scope…

I am going to run into… “The Son of A Preacher Man.”  He’s not really my type so I will tell him… “See you in September.”  Being the son of a Preacher Man and kind of full of himself he won’t take the hint so I will have to be blunt and explain that I would rather play… “Solitare” than be forced to hang out with him.  Which of course he’ll counter with but…“Baby, We Better Try to Get it Together.”  I can hear the conversation in my head as if it weren’t just the random voices trying to make something of nothing Preacher Boy is just going to have to put up with having a “Blue Christmas”… and get over it because … “until the end” of the world or when I become a … “Legend in My Living Room”, whichever comes first, he can’t use me as a …”Crutch” because that would just be insulting as if someone were to “Spit of Love”.  Ok that last one makes no sense.  Fine none of this makes any sense but I made a promise to myself I would try and blog every day.   This was my best effort today.  Welcome to the inner working of my imagination.

June 8, 2011 – A Request

Ok I need some book recommendations; I’m willing to read almost anything.  Mysteries, Thrillers, Crime, Romance, SciFi….

This is when I miss bookstores, walking in and seeing all the covers and titles.

I’ve just finished J. Carson Black’s Laura Cardinal Series and I am currently reading “The Shop”

In my “to read” queue are:

Liquid Fear by Scott Nicholson
Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson
Wild by Meghan O’Brien

Those three should get me through next week but after that I am at a loss, so suggestions please..

June 7, 2011 – Starting Again

My neighbor and I went running today.  I’m not sure that it actually qualifies as running.  It was more like a slow jog that would peter out to a walk mixed in with a bit of wheezing and an occasional whimper.  At one point I told M that she might need to get me a wheelchair, preferably a motorized one.  Of course this was said as we were walking up 86 stairs.  Obviously a lack of oxygen prompted the wheelchair request.  Who asks for a wheelchair on stairs?  Now M might have been visualizing pushing me down the stairs.  I was a serious damper on her running but at least I felt better this time than I did a month ago when we tried this and I was still under the weather.  I hate starting over when it comes to my fitness.  I had to do it 5 years ago after my surgery, I was in the best shape of my life just prior to surgery.  I don’t think I have been quite that fit since.  Then I started again after we moved here, ok several times afterward – lol.  I’ll get back in shape, I know that.  Give me a few weeks and I’ll be running 3 miles again.  Right now I’ll take running a mile and not coughing up a lung.

June 6, 2011 - Weekend Update

The beastly boy and I spent quite a bit of the weekend sitting on the balcony enjoying the nice weather this weekend:
He's a handsome beastly boy

It's also a little strange to sit on the balcony in in shorts and T-shirt and look across the lake at snow covered mountains.

June 3, 2011 – Ridiculous Thoughts

I have no idea what possesses me to have these ridiculous conversations with myself.. over and over again.  Today, I’m trying to make an appointment to get my haircut and at the same time I am debating NOT getting my haircut.  I’ve gone so far as to say I wont get my haircut until December and then maybe not even then.   I’m already 5 weeks since my last haircut and frankly considering a haircut has been crossing my mind for at least 2 weeks I can’t imagine how twitchy I would be attempting to go an additional 6 months without one.  Although, I have this crazy fantasy that my hair would get long…ish and I would wear it in a pony tail tied back with a leather strap.  If you have ever seen me in person you are probably hysterically laughing at that imagery.  Not the fact that I would wear a ponytail.  I have, in the past… when I was in college and too poor for a haircut.  The last time I was even remotely able to do that was 1990.  No the laughter would be that even if I did not cut my hair for an additional 6 months there is no way it would be long enough for a pony tail.  Well maybe a very short, painful pony tail.  Needless to say the very next thought that runs through my head is the extreme polar opposite, Annie Lennox short.  Although if I think about it I think my last haircut 5 weeks ago was that short and I LOVED it.

Ok I know why I am having these debates, because the girl who cuts my hair here does an OK job but she does not do an “I LOVE IT” job like Daniel does when I am home.  I am sane enough to know that flying home every 4 – 5 weeks for a haircut is a little overkill.  J

Daniel has even told me why I don’t love the haircut that the woman does for me.  Something about when Daniel cuts my hair he follows the shape of my head and she doesn’t and to get a really good short haircut you have to follow the shape.  I’ll take his word for it, I just put it down to Daniel is magical and my head has at least one major dent from the time I caught a line drive softball in the side of the head.  I have no idea why they are called “soft” balls. They aren’t soft at all, especially when a guy hits a line drive and you are on the pitchers’ mound.

Now that thought makes me count how many times I’ve been struck in the head and lost consciousness, yes they are different numbers.  Head striking I think 3 maybe 4, head stricking and loss of consciousness… 2.  Do you know what I find most amusing about the loss of consciousness thing?  People (usually doctors) ask “How long were you unconscious?”  “Um, I don’t know I was UNCONSCIOUS.  How long does it take to stop play of a field hockey game and get couches and players in a circle around you?”

Well enough rambling, happy Friday all.

June 2, 2011 - Lazy Day/Boring Post

I don't know where all these days are flying off to and suddenly we're in June.  Today is a National holiday in Switzerland: Ascension Day.  Obviously I haven't lived that many places.  Ok fine two places counting here, but it still feels strange that Switzerland takes a ton of Christian holidays as national holdiay.  L is definately not complaining because she has today off.  I on the other hand work US hours/days so I am working.

How is this a lazy day?  I got up at 7 and took the boy out for his constitutional and then as soon as we returned home, I climbed back into bed and slept until 12:30.  I have no idea what is up with that but apparently I was tired.
